What Are Deepfakes?

Can Deepfakes Turn Dangerous?

Due to the potential positive aspects of deepfakes, their negative aspects can threaten society when exploited for harm – when deepfakes become tools for deception, manipulation, and privacy violations.

Deepfakes can impersonate a person’s face closely enough to bypass facial recognition software. In a society that increasingly relies on biometric authentication like unlocking smartphones or verifying identity in airports, this is a legitimate security concern. And while various levels of face tracking solve different problems (e.g., user centered issues) it would be foolish to think these advances would stop anyone from tricking facial tracking machines – in fact, deepfakes have the capability to put the possibility of breaches at every level, from personal devices to government databases.

How deepfakes compromise corporate security through BYOD

By incorporating digital devices into the workplace, the trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) puts corporate privacy and security in jeopardy. With employees using personal smartphones, tablets, or laptops to access sensitive material, there’s vulnerability to work-related issues and in line with human impostors and identity theft. Employers should worry if the impersonation of an employee (e.g., CEO or senior manager) is that good, they can pose a deepfake impersonation to get an employee to divulge confidential information. And with remote IT management software expected to handle a distributed team, threats by deepfake are multiplied.

Imagine a fake video call from your “boss” requesting access credentials. Would you know it’s a fake?

Misinformation and Political Manipulation

The most dangerous potential use of deepfakes is in the creation of fake news and misinformation. A deepfake of a world leader declaring war, making racist comments, or supporting contentious policies could lead to unrest, protests, or diplomatic crises. These are not hypothetical situations. We have already witnessed doctored videos of politicians go viral, resulting in confusion for the public and chaos in the media landscape – and many individuals can no longer tell fact from fiction.

Effect on Public Trust

As deepfakes become more authentic representations, they can also undermine public trust in all digital content. If any video can be faked – then how can we trust what we see? This has led to a phenomenon referred to as the “liar’s dividend” – defined as the idea that real footage can now be dismissed as fake so that those who wrongdoing can walk, or laugh it off, scot-free.

Real-world example: In one notable example, a deepfake of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directed soldiers to surrender to Russian forces. Though the video was quickly discredited, it demonstrated how easily these types of tools can be weaponized.

Surveillance and Remote Monitoring Issues

As organizations and governments advance into remote monitoring tools for productivity, health, and security, the possibility of deepfake misuse continues to escalate. For instance, remote patient monitoring (RPM) devices used in healthcare could be compromised by deepfake audio or video feeds – impersonating doctors, manipulating diagnostic videos, or mistaken misleading reports. In national defense or critical infrastructure settings, the consequences of deepfakes could pose national security threats by feeding false information back into surveillance systems.

Why the Law Is Not Keeping Up

Regulation of deepfakes is a difficult proposition. In many states, there is no legislation that addresses the proliferation or production of deepfakes or regulation, if there is, does not cover instances of choreographed content that do not bear the hallmarks of some kind of financial fraud or explicitness.

Some social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook are implementing flagging of deepfake content, but detection and monitoring tools are closeted and people can create deepfake content anywhere on their own.

Can Technology Combat Technology?

The very same AI generative tools that produced deepfakes are now being used to detect them. Companies and research labs are developing software that will analyze blinking patterns, micro-expressions, and inconsistencies in lighting or motion that identify deepfakes. Even so, detection is a cat-and-mouse game. As deepfake tools create new deepfakes, they also add new features to defeat existing detections.

What Can You Do as a User?

  • While legislation and detection tools will continue to grow, here are some ways users and organizations can protect themselves:
  • Be skeptical before sharing audio-visual content of public figures or leaders that appears unusual, atypical, or out of character.
  • Be sure to verify sources before sharing video/audio content, especially during election cycles or emergency situations.
  • Organize BYOD usage and implement strong verification/authentication tools at workspaces.
  • Educate your employees about the hazards of deepfakes and how to identify and engender caution toward possible scams.
  • Use established application for remote monitoring with verification features.

So, are deepfakes harmless fun or a real threat? The short answer could be – both. Deepfakes can be found to provide creativity, humor and innovation to our digital environments, we can’t dismiss the potential for misuse. It is our personal, professional, and political responsibility to be cautious, ethical, and considerate as the science continues to blur the line between reality and fiction. The technology could eventually outpace our ability to detect and manage the impact of fake video footage. In a world where seeing really isn’t believing anymore, digital literacy may become our best weapon against the new generation of deception.
