India, 24th March 2025 – In a bold statement, Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) will soon take over 90% of coding tasks. But unlike some doomsday tech predictions, Vembu isn’t worried. In fact, he welcomes it.

When people say ‘AI will write 90% of the code’ I readily agree because 90% of what programmers write is ‘boiler plate,’” Vembu wrote on X. He believes AI is simply removing the repetitive, less creative parts of programming—what he calls “accidental complexity.” This, he says, will free up human programmers to focus on solving deeper, more meaningful challenges or the “essential complexity.

Vembu’s perspective offers a refreshing take. Instead of fearing AI’s rise, he sees it as a chance for programmers to do more impactful work. But he does raise an interesting question: Can AI go beyond pattern recognition and discover something entirely new?

AI can make mincemeat of patterns already discovered (by humans). Can it find totally new patterns?” he asks. “As with humans, that is much rarer and a quality known as ‘taste’ or ‘knowing where to dig’ or ‘follow a hunch or conviction all the way’ is needed to discover new patterns. I don’t know if AI can do this.

Beyond AI, Vembu is equally passionate about India’s manufacturing potential. In a separate post, he praised mid-sized machinery companies in Maharashtra and Gujarat for producing high-precision machines that were once imported.

I am very happy to see this tweet. It makes me want to go visit these companies!” he wrote. He believes India must focus on building advanced, affordable machines locally and eventually scale through strong industrial R&D.

Vembu’s message is clear: while AI will handle the mundane, human creativity and ingenuity will still be the driving force behind innovation.
