Suffern, NY, 26th March 2025 – CDx Diagnostics, Inc., a leader in innovative diagnostic solutions, has unveiled a new approach to enhance its WATS3D test, aimed at combating esophageal cancer. On March 25, 2025, Dr. Sidney Olefson of Prima CARE introduced an alternative specimen acquisition technique that maximizes the effectiveness of WATS3D testing. This method improves cellular adequacy, enabling both artificial intelligence and pathologists to analyze richer samples.

Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous condition affecting around 3.3 million Americans, can progress to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), a cancer with alarming growth rates. Over the past four decades, EAC cases have surged by over 600%. Early detection is critical; the five-year survival rate for localized EAC is approximately 48%, compared to less than 10% for advanced stages.

Dr. Olefson emphasized the importance of this advancement: “This WATS3D test sampling technique represents an important aspect of our ability to more reliably detect precancerous changes in Barrett’s esophagus. By increasing the cellularity of our specimens, endoscopists can provide consistent quality samples that help pathologists more easily identify concerning changes earlier and intervene before cancer develops. This could literally save lives.

WATS3D uses a unique brush sampling technique combined with AI-assisted 3D imaging to detect abnormal cells that traditional methods might miss. The introduction of this alternative sampling method further enhances its capabilities, ensuring higher-quality tissue samples for analysis.

Dr. Robert Odze, a leading gastrointestinal pathologist, highlighted its impact: “The introduction of this alternative specimen acquisition method has the potential to enhance sampling quality while prompting endoscopists to evaluate their own methods of specimen collection which can aid in detecting disease.

As esophageal cancer rates continue to rise, innovations like WATS3D and its improved sampling techniques offer hope for earlier detection and intervention. This advancement could help save lives by identifying precancerous changes before they develop into cancer.
