AWS and Ericsson Team Up to Create Autonomous Networks
Ericsson and AWS are transitioning to real autonomy. For the first time, Ericsson’s Cognitive Network Solutions (CNS) will use AWS’s best-in-class AI capabilities; transforming the way networks are run and optimized. Ericsson and AWS are committed to integrating their respective visions: improving performance; lowering operational cost; and creating smarter networks responding to change.
Jean-Christophe Laneri is the head of the Cognitive Network Solutions (CNS) unit at Ericsson. He mentions, “The combination of the power of AWS cloud and AI with Ericsson’s deep telecom experience will allow CSPs to adapt to modern challenges with flexibility and precision.” Fabio Cerone, from AWS, remarks, “Our vision together is to simplify operations and build better customer experiences through automation.”
RAN (Radio Access Network) automation using rApps is one of the more interesting innovations of the partnership. By bringing Agentic AI into the rApps, Ericsson enhances the ability of CSPs to achieve the higher levels of automation defined by TM Forum’s Autonomous Network Framework, especially Levels 4 and 5. Which means decisions can be made more quickly and accurately without human involvement, changing the quality of service and capital efficiency.
A new innovation is “intent based networking” which allows multiple layers of CSPs to set outcomes; for example improving coverage or better speed while not having to manage all the detail of how they would achieve those results. Agentic AI receives and interprets the operator’s intent, and makes intelligent decisions; thanks to a more intelligent architecture able to meaningfully integrate real-time adaptability to fulfill an intent using telecom functions to achieve that intent.
This partnership is much more than just a technology partnership; it represents a major change in the telecommunications engineering and management of telco infrastructure as a whole. Ericsson and AWS are not just building tools; they are engineering the future of network intelligence and agility.
