Japan’s Drug Shortage Crisis Gets AI Boost—Fujitsu’s Breakthrough Could Reshape Global Clinical Trials
KAWASAKI, NAGOYA, JAPAN, May 23RD , 2025 — In a bid to combat Japan’s growing drug loss crisis, Fujitsu Limited and Tokai National Higher Education and Research System (THERS) have completed groundbreaking field trials using generative AI to streamline clinical research processes.
The trials used data from around 1,800 breast surgery patient records collected from Nagoya and Gifu Universities. The AI system processed unstructured clinical notes, doctors’ observations, and transformed them into structured data that could be analyzed with 90% accuracy.
This increased efficiency in patient screening by a significant margin. In one instance, 42 potential trial candidates were identified, with 27 eventually being deemed eligible. The entire selection process was thereby shortened by approximately one-third.
This speedy method offers much promise in terms of tackling the issue of “drug loss, ”a big issue since Japan’s local approval delays impede the availability of drugs already in use abroad. Better and faster trial matching means improved access for Japanese patients to next-generation treatments.
Fujitsu and THERS plan to integrate the AI capability into Paradigm Health’s clinical trial platform to allow smooth interaction among medical institutions and pharmaceutical companies. To speed up drug availability, Paradigm Health will then pursue using real-world data (RWD) to enhance clinical trial efficiencies.
Meanwhile, THERS seeks international joint clinical trials in the Tokai area in the future. As such, Fujitsu is enhancing its Healthy Living Platform on May 30, which will feature this AI capability via its Kozuchi AI service, and later connecting with its enterprise-grade Japanese-language LLM “Takane.”
This innovation aligns with Fujitsu Uvance, the company’s mission-driven strategy to solve social challenges. By increasing the speed and accuracy of clinical trials, Fujitsu is fulfilling its promise to use digital transformation to improve medical care and societal well-being in Japan and beyond.
