January 23, 2025, New York and Noida, India-HCLTech and MIT Technology Review Insights have jointly published a study that finds that despite executives rating Responsible AI (RAI) as important, there is inadequate enterprise readiness in adopting this technology.

While 87% of respondents agree that RAI is important, 85% of them have rated themselves as inadequate in being able to implement it.

The report titled, “Implementing Responsible AI in the Generative AI Age,” was presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos, and brings to light that enterprises are not paying enough attention to key operational challenges that include overcoming the skills gap and meeting compliance requirements.

Steven Hall, President of Europe and Chief AI Officer of ISG, expressed,

“Everybody understands how transformative AI is going to be and wants strong governance, but the funding and operating models for Responsible AI are well below required levels.”

However, respondents noted that they remain excited about the future of business despite these challenges.

Respondents cite increasing adoption of generative and agentic AI in use cases like IT operations and customer service. While half of the respondents are confident about addressing operational risks, less than 25% seem ready to tackle user adoption issues and bias.

Guntur also pointed out the need to build powerful enterprise frameworks that promote ethics, safety, and sustainability.

Together with those frameworks, he proposed Guntur’s approach on how to speed up innovation, which is to partner with technological ecosystems. Lastly, the cross functional AI governance can be powered by the Centers of Excellence.

HCLTech took insightful steps by creating an Office of Responsible AI and Governance, populated with experts in relevant frameworks like NIST and the European AI Act.

It is this office, for instance, which focuses on innovative consulting, bias mitigation, and ethical deployment of technology.

With 85% of enterprises lagging AI readiness, this report shows that for businesses to remain relevant in the AI future, RAI is a must have, not an option.
