Davos, Switzerland, January 21, 2025 – At the World Economic Forum, Nicola Mendelsohn discussed the company’s approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI), fact checking, and the thorny regulations we face in this space.

Mendelsohn noted that there is no particular change in the way Meta applies fact checking internationally, even after growing global interest.

In the interview with the Bloomberg Television, Mendelsohn informed,

“For now, our approach to fact verification does not change beyond the borders of the United States. In that regard, we will continue to count on our relationships with independent organizations.”

This stance comes against the backdrop of increasing demands for AI responsibility and transparency from regulators around the globe.

“Regulatory overcomplication is an issue that we have faced in the European Union,”

was how Mendelsohn put it, noting that the regulations are indeed, quite complex. Mendelsohn pointed out that it is the other way around, that it is the lack of innovation that will result from that level of regulation.

Meta, she noted, is dedicated to ensuring that compliance does not stifle the growth of AI technologies.

The debate around moderation of content and AI systems that Meta employs for misinformation is deeply polarizing. Mendelsohn was quick to defend the company’s use of AI, as he proclaimed expert systems saying,

“AI is essential to the growth of our business while tackling challenging issues like misinformation, so it’s not flawless, but it is indeed getting better.”

Moreover, Mendelsohn reiterated Meta’s commitment towards diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). She emphasized the efforts made by the organization to develop a workforce that is representative of the diverse regions the company serves.

“Within the scope of our work, we place great importance on DEI values, and it is one of our top priorities,” Mendelsohn explained.

The changes as stated by Meta come at a time when the relationship between AI and governance is still a topical issue during debates held at Davos.

With tightening rules and increased expectation for accountability from the public, Mendelsohn’s statement provided insights into the issues the tech giant considers important and those that are still a problem.

Further information on Meta’s AI and regulation policies is expected as the World Economic Forum continues.
