Taiwan has just concluded a major global summit on the meaningful use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) – and they have a big reason to celebrate the outcome. The AI with Purpose Global Summit Taipei 2025, co-hosted by Taiwan Mobile, GeSI (Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative), and TEEMA (Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association) attracted around 1000 participants from the technology industry, government, and universities for a two day conference.

The primary emphasis? Exploring how AI can be applied to address important global challenges – sustainability and access to digital technologies. One of the significant highlights was the Digital with Purpose Awards, where Taiwan Mobile’s “AI Ocean” project won the Biodiversity Award! This is of great importance as this marks the second year in a row that the company has received international acknowledgment, winning with their smart energy project “MyCharge” the year prior. So what is “AI Ocean” all about? It’s a project built around smart technology (image recognition, AI chatbots, etc.) combined with assistance from ordinary citizens to identify and catalogue marine life around Taiwan. More than 9,000 people have each shared more than 19,000 photos collectively, allowing the system to learn how to identify over 150 marine species in Traditional Chinese. Notably, it’s the first such marine life database with this level of detail in the area. Many speakers at the summit emphasized the importance of leveraging AI for good, not merely to make profit. Dr. Tzi-cker Chiueh underscored the importance of combining AI with green energy for sustainable growth. Having mentioned that, Dr. Yi-Chin Lin of Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs highlighted five important strategies: improved computing capabilities, data sharing, talent development, industry support, and investment attraction.

Iris Liu, VP at Taiwan Mobile and a board member at GeSI, stated that the award wasn’t simply a technology award — it was an award to demonstrate how we can use digital technology to make the world better.

“This award isn’t just about technological innovation; it’s about the value of using digital power for sustainable transformation,” said Liu.

Luís Neves, CEO of GeSI, remarked that the summit was all about collaboration and how to build a peaceful and sustainable future and not about fighting over who controls the future. He added,

“This is not a competition to control the planet, but a shared effort to build a peaceful, sustainable future for all.”

EEMA’s Chairman Richard Lee said it all when he stated: AI should be a force for good, and Taiwan is ready to lead that change. The summit validated one thing — AI can and is ultimately about helping to build a better, greener future when used with purpose. He stated,

“AI must become a force for social good and environmental sustainability.”
