The platform, X, is taking advantage of the opportunity created by the kick-off from the U.S. app stores of ByteDance-owned TikTok and Lemon8. The new video tab appears at the bottom of its app, a space where the U.S. users can access a specific vertical reel. Recently, X announced:

“An immersive new home for videos is rolling out to users in the U.S. today.”

Users can now scroll through short videos within a newly featured section on the platform; with the former version, they had to tap the item itself in their timelines to have their content featured. While hints had been dropped earlier regarding a media tab for videos, this is the first official introduction of such a feature by X.

X has been concentrating on video content even more heavily; last year it launched a TV app exclusively for videos from various creators and organizations. With TikTok all set for potential disaster in the U.S., other social networks are looking for opportunities to fill the voids. Other than Edits, an application developed by Meta for use when creating the content to compete with ByteDance’s CapCut, Bluesky, an X competitor, has released its own vertical video feed.

Changes are coming at a time when TikTok has become unavailable to users in the U.S. due to a federal law banning it ever since concerns about national security arose. With its future uncertain, meanwhile, platforms like X are moving in to lure users wanting alternatives for short-form video. This is a wise opportunity that could increase user engagement by enhancing the status of X in the marketplace of social media video sharing.
